Claim
A demand for compensation for loss of or damage to goods, made against a carrier or an insurer.
A demand for compensation following loss, damage or delay. It may lie against the carrier under the contract of carriage, or against an insurer under a policy - and the two have different time limits, evidence requirements and liability limits.
Carrier liability is usually capped by international convention, often well below the value of the goods, which is the practical reason cargo insurance exists. Notice periods are short and missing one can extinguish an otherwise good claim.
