Carrier
The party that undertakes to transport goods under a contract of carriage.
Whoever contracts to carry the goods. That is not always the party operating the ship or aircraft: a NVOCC or forwarder issuing its own transport document is a contractual carrier while someone else performs the movement.
The distinction decides who a claim lies against. The document a shipper holds names the carrier it can sue.
