India import and export rules

Start with the direction of trade. Then add the product, origin, destination and current HS code.

Foundation coverage · Official sources checked 31 July 2026 · Detailed rules in review

Five layers decide what applies

  1. Trade direction.India’s export rules differ from its import rules.
  2. Product classification. The final ITC (HS) line sets the policy starting point.
  3. Product regulator.Food, chemicals, electronics and other controlled goods need extra checks.
  4. Customs and tax.Value, origin, exemptions and trade remedies can change the amount due.
  5. Other country. An export must also meet the destination’s import rules.
Important

“Free” under trade policy does not mean approval-free. A product law, labelling rule or destination rule may still apply.
