Clean Bill of Lading

A bill of lading bearing no clause about the condition of the goods or their packing when received.

Letters of credit almost always require one, so a notation added at loading - torn cartons, rusted drums, short count - can stop payment even though the goods eventually arrive intact. See dirty bill of lading.
