Detention
A charge for holding a carrier’s container outside the terminal beyond the free time allowed.
Charged when a container is kept outside the terminal - at a warehouse or yard - beyond the free time, until it is returned empty to the nominated depot.
Detention and demurrage can run simultaneously in some tariffs and are frequently conflated. Both are avoided by planning the return of the empty, not just the delivery of the goods.
