Rights in trade marks, patents, designs and copyright. They matter in trade because most customs administrations enforce them at the border: rights holders can record their rights, and customs can detain suspected infringing goods on import, export or transit.

Detention falls on the importer regardless of good faith, and parallel imports - genuine goods placed on the market without the rights holder’s consent for that territory - can be caught as well as counterfeits.
