Glossary term
Tariff
A schedule of duties applied to imported goods; also, a carrier’s published schedule of rates.
Two distinct meanings.
In customs, a tariff is the schedule of duty rates a country applies to imported goods, organised by the Harmonized System and usually with several rate columns - general, most-favoured-nation, and preferential rates under trade agreements.
In transport, a tariff is a carrier’s published schedule of rates, charges and conditions. Which is meant is almost always clear from context, but contracts occasionally manage to make it ambiguous.
