Containerization
The shift to moving general cargo in standardised containers rather than as individually handled pieces.
The transition, from the mid-twentieth century, to carrying general cargo in standard containers. It cut handling costs and time in port dramatically, moved cargo work from quayside to terminal, and made long global supply chains economic in a way they had not been.
