Conference

An association of ocean carriers on a trade lane that historically set common rates and conditions.

A group of shipping lines serving a route that agreed common rates and sailing arrangements. Conferences were exempted from competition law in many jurisdictions for much of the twentieth century.

Those exemptions have largely been withdrawn - the European Union ended its block exemption in 2008 - so the term now describes a historical arrangement more than a current one, though carrier alliances continue in a different form.
