Panamax
The largest vessel size able to transit the Panama Canal’s original locks.
A vessel sized to the original Panama Canal locks. The 2016 expansion introduced a larger Neopanamax standard, and both terms remain in use because the older locks still operate.
Canal dimensions have shaped ship design for a century, which is why vessel classes are named after the waterways that constrain them.
