Beneficiary

The party entitled to receive payment under a letter of credit or guarantee — normally the seller.

The party in whose favour a credit or guarantee is issued, and who is entitled to be paid under it. In a documentary credit the beneficiary is normally the seller.

Payment depends on presenting documents that comply with the credit, so the beneficiary’s real task is documentary accuracy rather than performance alone. Goods can be perfect and payment still refused on a discrepancy.
