Backhaul

The return portion of a round trip. Because the equipment is returning anyway, backhaul capacity is often sold below the headhaul rate.

The same imbalance appears in container shipping as a trade imbalance: a lane with heavy exports one way and light volumes back tends to be much cheaper in the light direction, and short of empty equipment in the heavy one.
